My current installation has survived three updates since Karmic, and like the others, This was not without problems., although both were caused by having unofficial packages, and solving them was simple. The message of “Installation could not be completed” (probably due to the bug with nspluginwrapper) and the interruption of its last stages, nevertheless, made me sweat while manually rebooting. But everything has worked normally, or better than that.

There are small improvements everywhere: from the Grub menu, better organized, and the boot sequence, to which they continue shaving seconds, to which I can sleep for the first time since Lucid. everything feels “so fresh and clean,” And I haven't even tried Unity yet., because with KDE 4.6 it's enough for me and I have plenty. Without a doubt the most versatile desktop environment, also accompanied by some of the best applications for Linux, especially multimedia (Amarok, digiKam, Kdenlive…), It only remains to ask the developers to consider having enough features soon, and focus on making the programs more stable.

Problems

Error updating “xserver-xorg-video-all” if you use the intel-driver PPA

The first error occurred when starting the installation.

In /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log:

Reinst Failed because of xserver-xorg-core:amd64

The cause is some conflict with the dependencies of the unofficial packages of the Glasen intel-driver PPA (https://launchpad.net/~glasen/+archive/intel-driver). to solve it, you have to revert the packages to the official versions, for which we can use ppa-purge:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purgue
sudo ppa-purge ppa:glasen/intel-drive

Could not install nspluginwrapper

My installation failed before cleaning, probably because of the following problem when installing nspluginwrapper. But apparently everything else was installed, so I just had to restart by hand to finish the update.

Errors appear in update logs and when installing new packages:

Configurando nspluginwrapper (1.2.2-0ubuntu9) ...
plugin dirs: :/var/lib/flashplugin-installer/
Auto-update plugins from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
Looking for plugins in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
Segmentation fault

And they are caused by some plugin in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ (Google Talk in my case).

The solution is to remove the plugins temporarily:

sudo mv /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.bak/
sudo mkdir /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo mv /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.bak/* /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
sudo rmdir /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.bak/

“Unable to contact KDED” when rebooting after installation

Restarting the session resolved the error.

Other details

Flash Player outdated even after fixing issue with nspluginwrapper

Mi browser I had problems with some video players (like the BBC) and it showed an old version of the plugin (10.0) despite flashplugin-installer installed the most recent one. Apparently the previous version was still installed, but deleting it solved everything:

sudo rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

gtk2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh is recreated as gtk2-default-theme.rc.sh

gtk2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh (to configure the theme for Gnome applications in KDE) is recreated as gtk2-default-theme.rc.sh, so we delete the old one:

test -f ~/.kde/env/gtk2-default-theme.rc.sh -a -f ~/.kde/env/gtk2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh && rm ~/.kde/env/gtk2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh

/var/log/messages empty

For some reason, Natty's rsyslog configuration disables several system logs: messages, debug y daemon.log, inter alia. To enable them, you have to uncomment the respective logs in /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf, or easier, run these pearls:

To see which ones are disabled:
perl -n -e 'BEGIN { undef $/; } s{(^#.*\n)*#.*/var/log/.*}{print "$&nn";}mge;' /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf

To enable them all:
sudo perl -pi -e 'BEGIN { undef $/; } s{(^#.*\n)*#.*/var/log/.*}{($r = $&) =~ tr/#//d; $r}mge;' /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf

Solo daemon.log y messages:
sudo perl -pi -e 'BEGIN { undef $/; } s{(^#.*\n)*#.*/var/log/(daemon.log|messages)}{($r = $&) =~ tr/#//d; $r}mge;' /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf

To then restart rsyslog:
sudo restart rsyslog
